Signs Your AC Needs to Be Serviced

admin • Oct 17, 2023

Having reliable AC is not only a matter of convenience and comfort but one of  safety as well. With summer here, you are likely using your air conditioner quite a bit. While you should have your HVAC serviced on a regular basis, there is still the chance that a component can fail and cause AC problems.

Some issues with a broken air conditioner are minor, a result of increased use, and may not warrant service. The key is knowing when a potentially serious problem exists so that you can schedule air conditioning repair.

The good news is that there are several signs that your AC needs the attention of a professional technician. Keep reading to find out what they are, so that you can address minor problems before they become major ones.

Temperate Air

If your  home AC unit  is blowing temperate or (even worse) warm air, that is a strong sign that something is wrong. It could be as minor as a refrigerant leak or wiring issue.

It also could be from a dirty air filter or a clogged intake supply. Frozen evaporator coils also could be the culprit. If the problem persists, it is time to line up air conditioning repair.

Low Airflow

Weak airflow is another issue that is attributable to a different set of AC issues. These can be associated with blower malfunctions or a clog in your ductwork.

Regardless of the cause, this is rarely a temporary issue that resolves on its own.

Blocked ductwork, for instance, can cause your system to work much harder than it needs to. This can lead to higher utility bills and shorten the lifespan of your system. It is best to address such issues before they worsen.

High Humidity

HVAC systems not only adjust the temperature in your home but help  control moisture levels  as well. Even in high-humidity regions, your AC should keep these levels to a reasonable grade.

If you notice that your home seems more humid than normal, even though it is cooling, this could be a sign of problems. These can result from the thermostat being in the incorrect setting. It also can be from buildup inside your system that is restricting the even air distribution throughout your home.

Loud Noises

Loud noises are a sign of a broken component or one that is not functioning as it should. Especially if you have lived in the house for some time, you know what your AC sounds like and the types and volumes of noises it makes. If you notice sounds that are unusual or very loud, it is worth investigating further (even if your system otherwise seems to be working as it should).

Repeated Cycling

During hot summer days, you expect your AC to kick and off as it cools your home and temperatures gradually rise again. But your system should not turn on and off all the time.

If you notice it doing so, this could be a problem with thermostat calibration or a damaged compressor. Your AC unnecessarily cutting on and off is bad for it, causing wear and tear, and should be addressed.

The technical description is: "a load calculation is a method of determining the heat gain and loss of a home or building so that HVAC equipment is properly sized. A building's heating or cooling design load is based on how well insulated the building is and in what climate it is located.” Problems that arise from over-sizing a system are as follows: During the air conditioning season, a main characteristic of central air is not just bringing the temperature down to get to the set/desired temperature, but also removing the humidity in the home/structure; the ideal percent of humidity should be between 30-50%. When you have an oversized system, it will struggle to maintain the 50% dehumidification, and you can accomplish bringing the temperature down; however, if the humidity is above 50% your body will feel uncomfortable and in turn, you will then lower the thermostat temperature, trying to compensate for the over humidification of the home/structure. So, the end result is to focus on removing humidity and the key is sizing the unit correctly. Another problem from oversizing a system is short-cycling the compressor. To give an example, when driving a vehicle do you get better gas mileage in town or on a highway (driving a gas-powered vehicle)? Most understand you get better gas mileage on a highway due to no starting and stopping, as there is in town. In the same way, that is how a central air conditioning unit operates, more efficiently and effectively, with a lower utility bill. Another side-effect of oversizing is getting less longevity out of an oversized unit, with more wear & tear on the system and higher utility bills. And finally, an oversized system can create an environment for mold to thrive. With high moisture content and darkness, these are both contributors to growing mold.
